Controversies Related To Milkha Singh
1. In 1998, when Paramjit Singh broke Milkha Singh’s 38-year-old 400m record, Milkha rubbished his record and said, “I don’t recognize this record.”
Milkha’s first objection was Paramjeet’s 45.70 timing. At the Rome Olympics, Milkha was officially hand-timed at 45.6, though an unofficial electronic timer at the Games saw him clock 45.73.
Years later electronic timers were installed in all international events. It was agreed that 0.14 seconds would be added to all hand timings to compare them with electronic timing. So, 45.6 made by Milkha’s hand was converted to the electronic time of 45.74.
Either way, Paramjeet had a better time, but Milkha was adamant and said: “My record of 45.6 still stands.
If a time has been entered it is there. You cannot change it after a few years.” Till the end Milkha Singh never believed that record.
2. In 2016, she exchanged some heated words with Salim Khan (father of Salman Khan). The story behind the controversy was the appointment of Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador for the Indian contingent for the Rio Olympic Games.
The sports fraternity, including Milkha Singh and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, had questioned this appointment. To defend Salman, Salim Saleem tweeted:
“Milkhaji this is not Bollywood, this is the Indian film industry and that too the biggest in the world. The same industry that saved you from fading into oblivion.”
In response, Milkha said, ‘Okay, they have made a film on me. I don’t think that the film industry has done me any favor by making a film on my life. “If they have a function, will they have a player as their president or ambassador?”
He further added: “There is no point in appointing anyone in this role. If an ambassador is needed, we have great players like Sachin Tendulkar, PT Usha, Ajitpal Singh, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore.
